The "American crisis" began at the Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia, when Swiss watchmakers became aware of the power, quality and competitiveness of American mechanised watch production. From this point on, Switzerland stepped up the pace of mechanisation.
In Boston, the American Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call, to his assistant Thomas Watson.
