Focus on the Girard-Perregaux “CIRCLE DIAL”

by @watches_and_culture

Let’s jump back to the late 1960s, where the Girard-Perregaux 9034, often branded as the Sea Hawk, was a solid but unassuming 34mm manual wind watch.

With Caliber 12 and small seconds, it blended into the crowd—until it got a funky twist. The 9034 was blessed with a series of wild dials, split into two styles, either hand-painted dials in shades of grey, black, white, and red, each with unique motifs or funky numerals in bold colors and designs.

Among the hand-painted versions, the “Circle Dial” is the most iconic. Featuring crescents that grow from 1 to 12, it’s all about the 3D effect. Each dial is hand-painted, making every watch unique. From far this dial is also reminiscent of a gun barrel or a vintage phone dial.
Completely quirky these Girard-Perregaux deserve more recognition for their artistic approach in an era that was still traditional when it came to watchmaking.
