What finer tribute could Breguet have paid to its founder’s brilliant horological invention? While there have been many interpretations of the tourbillon created in 1801 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, the one appearing at the heart of the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377 has a place of its own. At the time of its launch in 2013, this model immediately established itself as the world’s thinnest self-winding tourbillon, with its caliber measuring just 3mm thick and housed in an elegant 7mm slim case.
On the technical side, Breguet provides a spectacular demonstration of its expertise in this model. First of all, the decision to place the complication at 4 o’clock, rather than the customary 6 o’clock position, entailed a complete rethink of the entire movement. The tourbillon carriage also called for considerable technical sophistication. Made of titanium to ensure unrivalled lightness, it not only indicates the small seconds but also carries a silicon hairspring coupled with an escapement specially developed for this model. As a result, the balance wheel achieves the particularly high frequency of 4 Hz. The power reserve is also one of the strong points of the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5377, since its patented “high-energy” barrel ensures a generous 80-hour autonomy. And it does this without compromising the exceptional thinness of the caliber, equipped with a platinum oscillating weight located on the movement periphery and rotating in both directions.
The tribute to Fine Watchmaking traditions, and particularly to the work of Abraham-Louis Breguet, extends to the aesthetics of the model. While the overall effect is extremely understated, manual decorations reflect its splendid historical heritage. Four hand-guilloché patterns – Clous de Paris hobnailing, barleycorn, straight chevrons and cross hatching – adorn the silvered gold dial of the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 53677. The exhibition caseback provides a chance to appreciate the floral movement decorations that are entirely worthy of the classic case execution. The slim 42mm-diameter pink gold, white gold or platinum caseband is accentuated by the fluted sides, creating a refined elegance that can be admired from all angles.
