Don’t look for any particular meaning in the name placed under the infinity sign, other than as an anagram of Neuchâtel, the birthplace of the decidedly original HL watches. Right from its creation in 2004, Hautlence opted to play with expectations by developing an original combination of jumping hours and retrograde minutes paired with an exclusive connecting-rod/crank system, which appeared in a watch introduced the following year. Upon reaching the ‘age of reason’ – in 2011, after seven years in operation –, Hautlence reorganised its collections and defined three distinct universes. These include “Concepts d’exception”, dedicated to exploring mechanical horology, through which the brand expresses its pioneering spirit: expertise and creativity give rise to stellar creations such as the HL2, an iconic model representing the second generation of Hautlence watches.

Inspired by architecture, Hautlence adopts the principle of functionalism, which dictates that form follows function, in designing cases perfectly suited to the movements they showcase. As regards the rectangular HL2, observers can enjoy to the full the visual effects produced by the movement thanks to the extensive use of sapphire crystal – not only for the front and caseback, but also for the left-hand side, where the baguette-type calibre springs a fascinating surprise.

In the HL2, as in all HL models, the minutes are displayed by a retrograde hand – in this case across a semi-circle. The instant return from 60 to 0 triggers distinctive hours jump: the numerals appear on the links of a half-trailing chain that ensures the transition in three to four seconds. At the same time, the baguette module, complete with the regulating organ which is visible at 9 o’clock, rotates through 60 degrees. In addition to the tourbillon effect, statistically compensating for the effects of gravity, the entire sequence produces a different ‘freeze-frame’ image from hour to hour – six in all during a cycle repeated four times per day. In addition, the HL2 was the very first self-winding watch from Hautlence.

Loyal to its own unique spirit with a technical configuration that has remained unchanged since its launch, the HL2 is interpreted through various exterior elements – materials, treatment and colours – in series systematically limited to 28 units. The HL2 bowed out in 2019 after a final, one-off version, the HL2.3 Punk.
