In 1850, Giovanni Panerai becomes the first Florentine watchmaker. Fifty years later, he is designated supplier of optical instruments for the Italian Ministry of Defence. The watchmaker was able to capitalise on his military-aquatic past creating masculine models with an identifiable design. His Luminor and Radiomir collections are popular with diving enthusiasts and numerous collectors.

Giovanni Panerai opens a shop in Florence: it's the city's first watch-making school.
1936
Panerai develops the first prototype of the Radiomir watch for the Italian navy.
1950
Advent of the Luminor range with a case in the shape of a cushion.

Launch of a watch for diving in a bronze case: the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Bronzo 47 mm.
