Distinctive features

padlock-shaped case and clasp inspired by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor

A symbol of sentimental attachment, the Cadenas watch created in 1935 signaled Van Cleef & Arpels’ entry into the watchmaking world. Recognizable by its singular design, this model is believed to have been inspired – like the famous Zip necklace several years later – by the Duke and Duchess of Window, who were both great fans of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry. Designed as a jewel that tells the time, the Cadenas watch evokes the spirit of 'secret' watches. At a time when it was considered impolite for a woman to openly check the time, the Cadenas watch offered an ideal solution: its sloping dial visible only to the wearer meant the latter could read the time off easily without being seen to do so. On an aesthetic level, the Cadenas watch was based on a daring and avant-garde design. The very first gold model featured a double snake-style chain serving as a bracelet. The case design was straight and pure, while the lug followed the rounded curves of a padlock. In 2015, Van Cleef & Arpels celebrated the 80th anniversary of its iconic collection by introducing new models adapting its aesthetic codes to contemporary use. While initially designed to be read in secret, time is now very much in the spotlight. The slope of the dial has been maintained, but is now broader to ensure enhanced legibility, while the 12 hours are marked off. In this new version, the yellow or white gold Cadenas watch is lit up by a flurry of snowset diamonds or pink sapphires. Its clasp has been redesigned to ensure enhanced security thanks to two slim ceramic spheres ensuring optimal closure. The hidden polished part of the clasp provides room for a discreet personalized engraving. The bracelet – representing a key element in the design of the Cadenas watch – has also evolved. The gold snake-chain bracelet may be replaced by an alligator leather strap. Finally, the case now houses a quartz movement keeping track of time.
