In 1970 Omega received the coveted Silver Snoopy Award, presented by NASA astronauts in recognition of the brand’s unique contribution to space exploration and the critical role which the Speedmaster played in bringing the Apollo 13 mission safely back to Earth. For the 50th anniversary of the award and following on from two previous commemorative watches, Omega has upped the ante with a non-limited edition that goes beyond Snoopy-themed decorations. This third Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award introduces an ingenious mechanical elaboration on the caseback that shows the far side of the Moon with Earth way off in the distance. Because it is coaxially mounted on the small seconds hand, this Earth disc rotates once every 60 seconds. Similarly, the chronograph seconds hand is coaxially mounted with a counterweight arm that carries astronaut Snoopy in his command module. Whenever the chronograph seconds are in use, the intrepid beagle goes into orbit around the Moon. Note that Snoopy's trajectory is calculated so that, after the first 14 seconds, the module begins its return to Earth… exactly like Apollo 13.
