Stemming from the creative developments of Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, the UR-202 “Turbine Automatic” was born in 2008 and embodies the quintessence of Urwerk watchmaking.
First of all, it revisits the famous satellite complication that forged the renown of the independent watch Maison created in 1997. This complex and innovative system enabled extremely easy readings of the time by means of telecopic minutes hands operating through the middle of three orbiting and revolving hours satellites. The path of the hands follows the three sectors marking the minutes: 0-14; 15-44; and 45-60. When extended, the hands enable comfortable time readings, and when retracted, they serve to drive the rotation of the central satellite. The dial displays are complemented by moon-phase and day/night indications.
At the center of the satellite complication sits the carousel, the hub of the model. It controls the rotation of the hours satellites as well as all the maneuvers performed by the three telescopic hands that measure 4.8mm when fully extended and just 1.8mm once retracted. The extreme technical sophistication of the carousel calls for machining to the nearest 3 microns.
While the UR-202 stands out for its satellite-type display, it also features an original automatic winding system that can be regulated to ensure optimal efficiency. To achieve this, the Urwerk teams devised two turbines coupled with the rotor and visible through the back of the watch. When positioned in “Free” mode, they spin freely and enable optimal winding. In “Sport” mode, they act as two pneumatic brakes and reduce the winding force by about 35%. In “Stop” mode, they are slowed to a complete halt and block the rotor. This ingenious and simple principle based on optimizing air friction is inspired by the construction of the chiming clocks devised by 18th century master horologists. Coupled with the patented satellite complication, this system has earned the UR-202 a special stature on the watchmaking scene, infused with a blend of originality and impressive technical refinement.
